St Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen – About 15 years, a group of St. Maria Goretti parishioners began a ministry at the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen. On the first Saturday of every month, the group meets at the Soup Kitchen on Baldwin Street in Waterbury and prepares a hot lunch (roast chicken, potatoes, vegetables and dessert) which is given without charge to all individuals who come in for the meal. Even after the merger of St. Maria Goretti with St. Pius X, that ministry continues to this day and is a major activity of Armor Council Dei No. 3961.
It’s a very lean operation – we do it all with four people. Volunteering doesn’t require any special cooking talent, but it is hard work. We arrive at the Soup Kitchen about 8:15 am and don’t leave until almost 2:00 pm. We are on your feet the entire time. Two people cut the chicken; another breads the pieces and gets the trays in the oven along with the potatoes and vegetables. Desserts donated by local grocery stores are wrapped as individual servings. At 11:00 am, lunch service starts and continues until about 1:00 pm. While lunch is being served. we have cooking trays and pots to wash, floors to mop, and garbage to take out. We welcome Council members who wish to serve in this ministry.
Carolyn’s Place – Our Council has supported Carolyn’s Place, the local pro-life pregnancy care center in Waterbury. Carolyn’s Place helps women with unplanned pregnancies to choose life for their unborn child. Each year the Council sponsors a Baby Bottle Boomerang at St. Basil the Great Parish for Carolyn’s Place.
Once a year Knights distribute plastic baby bottles to parishioners as they leave Mass. The parishioners take the bottles home, fill them with change, bills or checks and return the filled bottles the following week for collection by the Knights. In 2025, through a Baby Bottle Boomerang, the Council collected over $3,000 for Carolyn’s Place.
Winter Coat Drive – The 2024 donation to St Vincent de Paul winter clothing included 85 coats and numerous winter hats, gloves and scarfs
